Lavurn is the side project become main project of Lavurn Lee from Toronto, who used to make music as Cassius Select. He has a more experimental side too, that came to the surface with the Fake moniker. Two years ago his first record under his real name came out following many years of being based in Sydney. I guess a certain nostalgia for home and the sururban hiphop scene there brought out a new R&B-inflected sound. His latest record, and first for Motion Ward, is Baby It Cold Outside from May. The 12-track LP is one of my favourites so far of this year, blending the experimentalism of World Music with Voice Actor’s weird submerged samples.
