80s HITS: The Megastars

#255

The Megastars’ tape from 1984 is probably one of the least well-known DIY pop releases of that decade. The scarce information online suggests that they were from Southampton in the UK, and of course they sound a bit like Marine Girls who were around in London a couple of years before (especially on the spoken ”Early Morning”. This one came out on a label called Very Mouth who also has a few vinyl releases – most notably by Stitched-Back Foot Airman and their early incarnation Games to Avoid.

One of the tracks is a Velvets cover, but the group’s originals are much stronger I think. Thankfully you can hear the whole thing with 10 tracks on youtube. Discogs also lists a demo tape from the same group. This one was shared with another band called Pigs On Heat and came out the year before. Maybe some day a label will give this a reissue. But I doubt there are any master, since the sleeve says it was recorded and mixed in four days.
