Svart Ridå is a new local band from Malmö making dramatic and very cinematic music somewhere halfway between pop and rock. I shared a stage with them earlier this year and was blown away by their live performance. They manage to distill the sound of a trio into something much larger than its parts. While the songwriting bears a striking resemblance to the once great Swedish group Kent (they sing in Swedish) it’s almost the instrumentals that strike out at me the most. “21:47” is a perfect example of that, from a group of musicians who still have most their lives and hopefully careers ahead of them.
The self-titled album came out on Swedish label Argle Bargle a few days ago. Sadly it doesn’t seem to be available to buy digitally, but hopefully there’ll be a physical release soon.
