Fake Fruit

Sonny Smith’s (of the Sunsets) label Rocks In Your Head have struck gold once again. Following the world-changing discovery of The Gonks, the debut from Oakland-based Fake Fruit is almost as much of a revelation. Their self-titled album that came out last month is such a joy to listen to, reminding me of Bikini Body and older UK groups like Life Without Buildings (especially on “Swing and a Miss”). Fake Fruit’s free-form songwriting develops in surprising directions, always held together by Hannah D’Amato’s vocals. Drawing inspiration from Wire and Pylon, the colourful album artwork stands in stark contrast to the disharmonic music. Fake Fruit might be my favourite new US group since Special Interest.
