The Avocados

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #146

Just a missive in the history of popular music, The Avocados was a DIY pop group and a side project of the London-based collective The 49 Americans. The group, that also included a member of The Slits, was assembled by American ex-pat Andrew Brenner.

The Avocados only released one single that came out in 1981 on Choo Choo Train Records, a label started by Brenner to release music by his different projects. Both “I Never Knew” and its b-side were written by Etta Saunders whom I’ve heard was only 15 at the time. Etta was also a part of The 49 Americans along with Eddie Saunders.

During the summer of 2022, the reissue label Optic Nerve gave it a new pressing on green vinyl, which might appeal to people who are into Trixie’s Big Red Motorbike, The Petticoats or other early 80s DIY groups from the UK.
