Surprise Chef is the Melbourne group who have caught the attention of the celebrated Mr. Bongo label out of Brighton. I was lucky enough to see them live during a session for PBS radio and having never heard them before I was quite impressed with their funky, soundtrack-inspired instrumental soul. I also saw the duo of Lachlan Stuckey and Jethro Curtin perform as College of Knowledge, which is the name of the studio where this record was cut and a collective of musicians based around it. One of the tracks here is called “College Welcomes Carl”, which is the name of the bass player. This is their second album in less than a year, after their self-released debut.
