I wasn’t familiar with Reuben Sawyer from California until recently, but he has released music on labels like Constellation Tatsu, Iron Pier and Funeral Party under a bunch of different names. His most recent project is Anytime Cowboy, which has been growing on me over the past month. The self-titled LP that came out on French label Third Coming two months ago sounds like equal parts late-era Pavement and Swell Maps. Imagine a sunny Californian take on the latter’s “Cake Shop”, via late nights at NYC’s long gone Cake Shop. It’s similar to Sawyer’s other band The Column, but ultimately more rewarding.
