Earlier this year Stereolab reissued their perhaps most beloved album Emperor Tomato Ketchup – of course I bought a copy – this time as a double-vinyl with no extra tracks. Apparently they decided to quit the ongoing reissue scheme of expanded 3LP editions and are now reissuing everything again as double-vinyl packages at a lower price.
But the perhaps biggest news of the year is that the certified legendary UK group put out a new album, with 13 tracks recorded after their 2019 reunion. A reunion that thankfully enabled me to see them live twice – so I’m not heartbroken that their current world tour is not taking them to Copenhagen.
Instant Holograms On Metal Film sounds remarkably like prime era Stereolab with all its trappings. It came out on double-vinyl on their own label Duophonic, in collaboration with Warp, at the end of May and is one of the must-have releases of 2025 so far.
