The Catburgers was DIY pop group from Edinburgh, formed in 1985 after having seen Television Personalities live. They recorded a bunch of demos 1986-87, including one in London that was supposed to become a single for Dan Treacy’s label Dreamworld. They were already working with other Scottish groups like The Mixers. It never came to be, but you can hear the recordings done in London on bandcamp (including one track featuring Jowe Head of Swell Maps).
Slumberland Records must have heard these tracks, because one of them is now included on their forthcoming retrospective of the band’s music, called Galashiels. Galashiels is a town south of Edinburgh, but it’s unclear what their connection is to it. The 9 tracks were recorded between 1985 and 1990, when they split up. The music sounds a lot like Orange Juice or Jesse Garon & the Desperadoes. It also reminds me somewhat of the rediscovery of Endless Bob Brown back in 2009.
Check out the two videos below for some period charm and the full LP is out September 25.
