LUNCHMEAT: KMRU

One of the names on this year’s Lunchmeat lineup that’s spoken in hushed revered tones is KMRU – at least if you mean in ambient circles. I first saw the Berlin-based Joseph Kamaru from Nairobi in a big church for Intonal festival in Sweden. And earlier this year I was lucky enough to catch his latest piece, created together with Nick Verstand, at Rewire Festival. This piece, called As Nature, is now coming to Lunchmeat next week. It brings together not only sound and visuals but scent as well. Don’t miss your chance to see this amazing gesamtkunstwerk, which has also been shown at the Barbican.

While KMRU released his latest full-length Kin on Editions Mego at the beginning of the year he actually had a new cassette out earlier this month. The self-released crop came out on a small run of tapes that is already sold out and includes 13 new cuts. It’s a beautiful release and quite different from the slow build of the tracks on Kin.

KMRU’s tour continues during the remaining months of the year, bringing him to e.g. C2C festival in Italy and Le Guess Who? in The Netherlands, where he will be presenting an 8-hour project together with 8 other acts – including ouri and Elvin Brandhi.
