Bikini Mutants was an 80s post-punk group from the small of Yeovil in England. Today they’re mostly known for being the first band of My Bloody Valentine bass player Deb Googe. They started playing together in 1981 and became friends with punk band The Mob – helping them set up the label All the Madmen.
In 1981 their track “Paper Plane” appeared on a cassette compilation and they soon went to nearby town Milborne Port where they recorded two demos. These became the foundation for their self-released tape from 1982.
Let’s Mutate is the title of a new retrospective 12-track LP from La vida es un mus’ reissue project Sealed. It includes all the tracks from the tape, the compilation track and a few extras. Back in May, Far Out magazine featured an interview with Googe and vocalist Criss Cole to coincide with this release.
Not long after the tape came out both Googe and Cole moved to London. In 1985 Googe joined My Bloody Valentine after an audition. The band had then just recently moved to London after forming in Dublin and then trying their luck in The Netherlands and Berlin. Dave Goldsworthy later played in The Chesterfields.
