The Swedish festival PLX is on hiatus once again, but that’s not stopping them from putting on a big event in Malmö this weekend. Ode Joy is a small two-day festival that calls on big names like Zoë McPherson and Jules Reidy, as well as small completely unknown Swedish musicians and artists.
The event is taking place in the new museum that was once a casino, but is now a part of Malmö Art Museum. There’s also a club afterwards, hosted by Inkonst. One of the DJs playing is DINA, who runs Nachtcrew in Berlin and has played plenty in Copenhagen. She recently curated this amazing compilation for Air Texture, so we wanted to ask her a few things as she prepares for her set.
The PLX festival is coming to Malmö this weekend, and you are playing! What can we expect from your set?
I’m really excited to play in Malmö for the first time and it’s sick to do it for PLX at Inkonst. I spent some time in Malmö a few years ago so it holds a special place in my heart. Playing a festival’s after party is always fun because you receive so much energy that has been harboured throughout the day, and my priority is to make sure it lands nicely. I’ve prepared an energetic psychedelic set with lots of rolling basslines and deep hypnotic rhythms.
We just wrote about the comp you curated, how does curation differ from compiling a DJ set for you?
Yes, and thank you for the lovely words! I think curating a set is very context specific because it depends on where you’re playing and which slot. I want to create the most fitting sound and experience for that time, and I always leave room for improvisation as I read the room. When I curate a compilation like Rituals, my focus is highlighting interesting subgenres and sounds that would fit across different contexts and dancefloors. I would say one of the things they have in common is the selection of artists, I’ve played music by every single artist on that compilation in my DJ sets.
What is your label/event series Nachtcrew up to this year?
This year, my sister Nadia and I are working on image work + design and photography with Nachtcrew. She recently creative directed and shot a series of photos of me as part of a photography project that accompanies Rituals. We’ve also recently collaborated with 10/10 Studio in Oslo and designed Nachtcrew merch with them, which you can find here and here.
You have a strong connection to Copenhagen, can you tell us a bit about that?
Yeah Copenhagen is very dear to me. I connected with the BunkerBauer crew years ago over music and met more of the community through some festivals and outdoor parties, and of course my beloved Den Anden Side. I felt very aligned with them both musically and politically and our friendship has continued since. I still spend a lot of time in Copenhagen visiting friends and playing and I cherish my time there a lot. It’s always cute and rowdy.
