Sometimes I swear I get musical amnesia, at least when it comes to pre-pandemic times. For example, when True Blue turned up in Copenhagen a few years ago, I had no idea that it was the same artist I’d listened to quite a lot in 2018. At that time Maya Laner was still based in New York where she’d been playing with the band Porches (who went on to release an acclaimed album last year). Not even when I saw the cover of Edge of did I remember listening to it (thank goodness for last.fm).
True Blue’s first album Star Witness came out October 17 on her own label True Nature, and you may remember we included the single she did with The Bird in our Apple Turnover playlist last year. The 11 tracks on the LP gathers tracks released as far back as 2022, and right up to the Cocteau Twins cover from last month. Vinyl available stateside from New York label Ending Music.
