There have been plenty of fine releases from forgotten 80s Glasgow bands in the past year. For example the Meat Whiplash collection on Silver Girl, and of course the Peel Session of their later incarnation The Motorcycle Boy (featuring the unreleased ”I Could Make You Happy”).
Speaking of unreleased material – in April a one-of-a-kind 10” was released on Windmill Records. It features 4 tracks from a session recored by Glasgow group Christine’s Cat in 1988. The group consisted of Christine Grant as well as two members of The Golden Dawn – Kenny Forte and Robert Smith. Those guys had already released a 7” on Sarah Records, together with third member Ulric Kennedy (previously in The Mixers and The Catalysts).

It came out in 1988, and following year Christine’s Cat debuted on the same Bristol label with a flexi. It turned out to be their only release and on the more noisy end of the spectrum for a label that was otherwise known for the neo-acoustic sound of bands like Blueboy. Of course the flexi only held one song: ”Your Love Is…” so what happened to the rest? Now you can finally hear it on Like a Summer’s Day, an EP including all four tracks and released along with a video of the title-track.
No surprise it sold out quickly. The Golden Dawn released their second single for Sarah Records in 1989 as well, and what I guess was a post-humous release a few years later. At that time Robert Smith already had a new project called The Besotted, whose only release came out in Germany in 1992.
On a side note, Windmill Records is actually the same label that put out the amazing Corrupt Postman compilation tape in 1988. Perhaps they had planned to release the Christine’s Cat songs way back then? Who knows. They did release two compilation flexis in the early 90s, but of course by that time Christine’s Cat was long gone already.
