80s HITS: Vita Noctis

#251

Vita Noctis was a Belgian group that was around in 80s, but a bit later than the first DIY tape scene. They were inspired by post-punk and started playing together already in 1981 as a trio. In the group were the Kips twins, as well as one of their partners Martine Genijn.

The mixed electronic rhythms and synths with bass and electric guitar to create sparse but haunting recordings that were mostly self-released on tape. Finally, in 1986 they were able to release a 12” recorded in Gent on the Mad In Belgium label. It includes ”Alone” which is one their most recognised songs.

In 2012 their whole back catalogue got a remastered reissue by Dark Entries Records and Minimal Maximal Records, who teamed up to release the double vinyl compilation Against the Rule. The cover featured new art by Stephan Barbery, whom they worked with in the 80s too.

Inspired by the new interest in their music, Vita Noctis (which means ‘night life’ in Latin) decided to reform and record new music. In 2015 their new album No Place For You came out.
