80s HITS: Film Noir

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #246

In our previous entry for this series we featured a Greek group, and here’s another one worth familiarising yourself with. Film Noir was on the same label as Plastic Dolls – the Piraeus-based Wipe Out! Record. And with Never Ending Dream they had the third release. This 12” was the Athens group debut and its moody sound definitely places them in today’s darkwave category. The music on these 6 tracks is rudimentarily recorded and if it wasn’t for Mariella Loukaki’s emotive vocals they could have been a punk band.

The record became a collectible and in 2014 the Greek label εἰρκτή (Eirkti) reissued it, together with a 7” featuring two previously unreleased tracks that are just as great. Unfortunately, this is also long since sold out.

Finally, for that label’s 10th anniversary in 2015 another Film Noir recording appeared on the box set they released. “Fay” sounds slightly more pop than the rest of their output but it’s still a great document of their songwriting skills.
