80s HITS: Plastic Dolls

RECORD TURNOVER 80s HITS #245

We recently wrote about the Greek duo In Trance 95, and one of their labelmates was the Patras group Plastic Dolls. The were a new wave fivepiece but nowadays could be called ‘minimal wave’. The highlight of their sound is, to me, the vocals of Christina Mantoideis who also played synthesizer. It brings to mind British groups like Section 25 and maybe The Wake.

Plastic Doll’s only single came out in 1984, the same year as the former’s “Looking From a Hilltop”. But before it was picked up by Wipe Out! it was released on their own label Violent Crime Records. This has become incredibly rare these days, as a one-off private press. But there were more tracks languishing in the vaults.

When Athens label Eirkti reissued the 45 in 2014, they added two unreleased tracks – making it a double 7”. The label isn’t around anymore but reissued a lot of great Greek music from the 80s like Film Noir and Anti. The unreleased tracks are more straightforward pop, but the original a-side “Don’t Forget Me” is still a classic.
