Every now and then we feature an older release, perhaps if it’s one that has had a deep impact on me. I recently discovered the French duo Frank (Just Frank), listening to Mannequins’ synthwave compilation. They were around at the same time as groups like Led Er Est and Blank Dogs and were even signed to a New York label, called Weird.
Christopher Skarimbas’ and KD’s guitar-based coldwave sound may have been atypical for the sunny Rivera, but they also worked with German labels Mannequin and aufnahme+wiedergabe. Their only longplayer was The Brutal Wave from 2010. It’s a brilliant album that reminds me of many 80s acts but also newer projects like Human Figures.
Discogs also lists Hayden Payne (Phase Fatale) as a sometime collaborator (I didn’t even know until now that he was once in New York group Anasazi that I used to love).
